Leadership

That all-encompassing word! Used liberally and to mean many things. But who can really describe it?

Let's see what some people say (including us).

"Transformational Leadership is a way of BEING, not DOING"

If we put the emphasis for leading simply on doing we will not transform people and organisations, we will simply change short-term activities and behaviours which quickly get forgotten.

The 'journey' of leadership is a journey of:

bullet

Courage in the face of Fear

bullet

Trust in the face of Doubt

bullet

Hope in the face of Despondency

These attributes are not mutually exclusive, they are opposite sides of the same coin. What's called for is balance - holding the tension of all at the same time and walking the path of life.

Johann Diaz, CEO, Executive Awareness

"The word 'leader' comes from the word laed meaning a path, a journey, the course of a ship across the water" Peter Danby, Institute of Leadership

"Leadership is a personal expression and no two leaders have ever expressed it the same way............. Training can explain concepts at an intellectual level and can develop certain skills but in developing leadership much more is required. Developing self-awareness, recognising behavioural issues, using creativity, imagination and your whole self is needed." 'Unleashing Leaders', Hilarie Owen

"To be a leader is a noble thing, it requires commitment to the path and to the people who travel on that same journey and give the power to lead them. It involves responsibility for navigating the path and for doing what needs to be done to help those people achieve their goal." Peter Danby, Institute of Leadership

"Leadership is behaviour that creates constancy and unity of purpose together with an environment where people and the organisation can excel." Alan Jones, Managing Director, TNT Express

"Leadership is an ongoing process of learning about oneself and the world." 'Unleashing Leaders', Hilarie Owen

"...It's not enough [for CEOs] to do the job, walk the talk, live the dream and all that. Leaders must also manage their emotions". Howard Davies, Chairman, Financial Services Authority (on reviewing 'The New Leaders' by Goleman, Boyatzis and McKee)

"Leadership is not mystical or rare. Leadership is not a part of management that can be bolted on. Leadership is the individual expression of human spirit and as such requires opportunity and environment to be expressed, practised and valued."  Unleashing Leaders', Hilarie Owen

Leadership's first rule - "Know Thyself"
